This is the first edition of the Snapshots project, a series of four 7" singles of new solo music instigated by Ola Trzaska of Kilogram Records, which will be created and released during the course of 2021. With rare exception, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the music I was developing during 2020 was based on the solo format. I had just completed my first large scale solo album project in 5 years for the Corbett vs. Dempsey label called, The Field Within A Line, when Ola got in touch with the idea of organizing a singles series with me for her label.
The music for the C vs. D album was generated from completely new compositional materials, and I wanted the Kilogram recordings to be as different as possible from The Field Within A Line. The 7" single already created time limitations and, at the same time as I started considering how to approach the short duration I'd be working with, Damon Locks introduced me to the the Quakers album, Supa K: Heavy Tremors. Its longest track is 1:45, and the average length of the tunes on that recording is about 60 seconds. I sent a copy of Supa K: Heavy Tremors to Ola and suggested that this might be an intriguing way to approach a single of improvised music, with the possibility of only having a few minutes of music on each side. Why not create two "micro-improvisations" of about a minute and a half per side, using each instrument I play on every single in the series? Ola liked the idea and these are the first results of this recording strategy, all dedicated to Japanese artists and to one of my favorite places in the world.
